Description
A small brass skull, the kind of object that once sat on a scholar’s desk beside the inkwell and the hourglass. 1.3 inches tall, cast at one fifth of life size.
Brass runs warm. In low light it goes properly golden, and with age it settles into a deep antique brass tone rather than simply dulling.
The brass goes all the way through. Real brass powder is mixed into the whole casting – which is why the piece has the heft of a small foundry object.
This is metal casting with the heat taken out of it. The powder goes into liquid resin, poured into a mold made from the skull I sculpted, and every casting is then polished by hand until the brass in the surface comes to a shine.
Yours is made once you order it, which means it will differ a little from the photographs. You will have a unique and special item all your own.
On a mantel. On a stack of old books. Some desks need exactly one strange golden object, and this is a reasonable candidate for the job. The Dutch vanitas painters kept a skull in the frame beside the flowers and the fruit. Not morbid. Just accurate about which of the three lasts longest. It also makes an odd and memorable gift for someone whose taste runs gothic and who is impossible to shop for.
The photographs show all three finishes side by side, which is the easiest way to judge between them. What you are buying here is the brass one alone. The bronze and the metal sculpture are their own listings.
All sculptures are made to order and take 3 to 7 days to produce.
